TRAIL RATINGS:

Moderate Trails
Moderate Trails have a ranking from 4-6/7 and are generally for vehicles with 33″-35″ tires, limited slip or one locker in their differentials, both front and rear locked preferred. Vehicles should be equipped with a hard top and/or roll cage and a winch if possible. Trails start to get difficult and test the driver and spotter’s skill in navigation. This is a good start to get familiar with the vehicles dimensions as well as to start tapping into the vehicle and drivers capability to work with each other. These Trail Names are: West Rim Trail (4), Razzle Dazzle(4/5), Resurrection (5), Milt's Mile Lite (6), Warn’s World (6), Sampsonite (6), and Slip Lock Gultch (6). John’s Trail (7) and Plan B (7) can also be run in the moderate class with an understanding to want to push your mental limits and take the by-passes when needed.

Difficult Trails
Difficult rated trails generally have more demanding terrain and therefore require better equipment to conquer the terrain more effortlessly. Vehicles need to have lockers front and rear, tires ranging from 37-40 with very skilled drivers able to finish easier trails with 35″ tires. Difficulty Ratings are roughly 7-8. Body damage may occur and vehicles should be outfitted with Body protection, Hydrolic assist steering, beadlock wheels, Winch, safety gear, and recovery equipment. Properly built Roll Cages or factory steel tops are recommended. These Trail Names are: Double Sammy (7), John's Trail (7), Plan B (7), "Triple 7's" (8), Risky Business(8) and Joint Effort (9) . 

Beginner

  • This easy SUV trail promises a delightful journey to the picturesque Toquerville Falls, offering a serene experience with beautiful waterfalls and captivating scenery along the way.

  • East Rim Trail provides a scenic journey, beginning at the base of the Hurricane Cliffs in Warner Valley and crossing over Sand Mountain via the East Rim to the West Rim, concluding at the Washington Dam Road staging area. With a 3 rating, this trail features several ledgy areas and a sand dunes crossing. Stock high-clearance 4x4 vehicles with properly inflated (aired down) tires can navigate this trail successfully.

  • This trail is minimal, making it suitable for stock vehicles. Even beginners should find it manageable, promising a delightful journey through southern Utah's captivating landscapes.

  • Embark on a fabulous journey to the top of the Hurricane Cliffs with expansive views stretching for miles. This 3-rated trail follows the historic Honeymoon Trail, once taken by pioneers traveling to the St. George Temple for their weddings, often from as far away as Arizona. Serving as one of the first wagon trails down the cliff, the trail showcases sections with hand-stacked rocks supporting the road surface, offering glimpses of original trail paths. The spectacular views from the top include the cliff edge overlooking Sand Hollow Reservoir and Sand Dunes, as well as a panoramic view straight up Zion Canyon.

  • Most of West Rim Lite Trail offers a scenic tour along the rim of Sand Mountain, treating adventurers to breathtaking views of Pine Valley Mountain, Sand Hollow Reservoir, St. George City, Warner Valley, and the Hurricane Cliffs. While the trail primarily consists of sandy roads, it sprinkles in a few slickrock challenges and a thrilling sand dunes crossing. This trail caters to stock 4x4 vehicles with properly inflated tires, providing an enjoyable ride with occasional challenges to showcase their capabilities.

Moderate

  • This trail takes you from Hurricane to the historic town of Gunlock, Utah, continuing on a well-maintained dirt road through the high desert. You'll pass through a charming red canyon, offering a fun introduction to rock crawling for first-timers. Along the way, check out a couple of caves tucked into the walls of sliprock fins, with the Birthing Cave just a hundred yards from the parking spot. The journey concludes with a scenic ride around Gunlock Reservoir before hitting the pavement again.

  • This trail, rated at level 4, offers a variety of challenges, including several steps, sandy stretches, and narrow washes, all while navigating between large trees. Your efforts will be rewarded with stunning views of Utah Mountain Arch.

    The trail commences in the town of Gunlock, where the excitement kicks in as you wind your way through the trees before ascending Utah Mountain.

  • Milt's Mile Light Trail offers a scenic off-road adventure along the edge of the original Milt's Mile Trail, providing breathtaking views of Pine Valley Mountain, Sand Hollow Reservoir, Hurricane Cliffs, and Zion Park. During United By Bronco, spectators can enjoy watching the challenging sections of the 6-rated Milt's Mile vehicles negotiating tough obstacles in the canyon below. This trail is rated a 4, featuring some intimidating sections at the beginning, but with good spotting and competent drivers, stock high clearance 4x4 vehicles can successfully navigate it.

    West Rim stands out as one of United By Broncos most sought-after trails due to its versatility, accommodating a diverse range of vehicles from stock to heavily modified. This trail offers an exciting experience for everyone, providing ample challenges for the seasoned off-roaders while allowing spectators to witness the varying degrees of difficulty. What sets West Rim apart is its ability to bring together different vehicles, creating a cohesive tour where each participant finds their level of challenge.

  • Bzzackwards, a name derived from combining "buzz" and "backwards," is a trail that's sure to grab your attention. Towards the end, it flips the script by following the West Rim Trail in reverse. If you've only experienced West Trail in its regular direction, running it backward feels like a whole new adventure with fresh challenges and views.

    Starting at the Green Gate, the trail heads south, then west, tackling some challenging fins and climbs along East Fenceline, passing by the end of the Double Sammy Trail. After crossing the fence, it turns south and ascends the Dunes, leading to a tricky descent down Comp Hill. Winding above the rim, a drop into a hard right and climb tests unlocked vehicles. The trail reaches the end of the West Rim Trail at the Rock Garden area before backtracking along West Rim, offering scenic diversions and passing small arches.

    Razzle Dazzle is a delightful off-road trail that combines moderately challenging obstacles with breathtaking scenic views on Sand Mountain. The trail even incorporates a segment of the historic Fathers Dominguez and Escalante trail, adding an extra layer of historical interest to the off-road adventure.

    The trail between Slip Lock and the Water Tanks Road, nestled in the heart of Sand Mountain, offers off-road enthusiasts a unique adventure into a section of the mountain that has remained unexplored until now.

  • The first quarter-mile of the Fault Line trail will definitely wake you up! While technically a short entry trail that feeds into the West Rim Trail, the Fault Line is a favorite during winter events in the St. George area. The challenging obstacles on the Fault Line make it a preferred optional challenge on West Rim to maintain consistent difficulty.

    The trail boasts numerous 7 and 8 rated optional obstacles, with Horseshoe Falls in the second section standing out as a particularly challenging feature, known for tip-overs and potential damage. The final section offers additional options, each requiring skillful navigation to prevent damage to both the vehicle and its occupants.

    Unveiled in the spring of 2018 by UPLA and the Desert Rats, Wayne’s World weaves through the less-explored regions of Sand Mountain, embarking on a 6 ½ mile oblong loop. The trail commences at the Red Gate, adjacent to the Green Gate, promising off-road enthusiasts a unique journey through Sand Mountain's hidden gems.

Difficult

  • Register for Thursday Group Run

    Double Sammy is a trail that throws non-stop rapid-fire challenges, including some extra-hard options, making it a packed adventure in a relatively short distance. Amidst the difficulty, it also treats drivers to fantastic scenery.

    While the views of Sand Hollow Reservoir, Zion Park in the distance, Hurricane Cliffs to the east, and Pine Valley Mountains to the west are stunning, drivers are intensely focused on the 10 feet of trail ahead whenever they're in motion. The trail features lots of off-camber sections, max steep climbs, and descents.

    Triple 7, now extended and upgraded to an 8-rated trail, presents an exhilarating off-road experience with a series of challenging obstacles strategically placed along the route. The trail demands continuous attention from drivers, providing minimal respite between obstacles for an intense and engaging journey.

    John's Trail is nestled in the heart of the Sand Mountain (also known as Sand Hollow) OHV Area, offering a short but thrilling 10-mile off-road adventure with numerous optional obstacles. Modified stock jeeps and more built-up rigs will find this trail suitable, though the possibility of body damage exists.

    Milt's Mile is a trail with a rich history, originally developed by Milt Thompson, a local 4x4 shop owner. Over the years, the trail has evolved, becoming more challenging and offering spectacular scenery. The addition of obstacles above the 9-rated "Nasty Half" trail has increased the trail's difficulty to a 7, making it an exciting route, especially during United By Bronco.

  • Register for Friday Group Run

    Plan B, located at the southernmost edge of the Hurricane Sand Dunes, offers an off-road adventure through challenging terrain and scenic landscapes. Starting from the Hurricane Water Tanks, the journey to the upper dunes involves a bumpy ride, testing the capabilities of off-road vehicles. The trail itself presents a series of obstacles, including off-camber sections, steep climbs and descents, and challenging turns, all set against the backdrop of stunning views.

  • Milt's Mile, named after its creator Milt Thompson of Dixie 4 Wheel Drive, was one of the first marked trails on Sand Mountain. Now, there's a pumped-up version – Broken Milt's! Starting at Milt's beginning, this trail takes a western turn, throwing in some serious ledges and cracks to conquer. A massive playground follows, featuring obstacles ranging from 4 to 10 in difficulty – drivers get to choose their path here!

    The adventure then leads back to the Hard Left Turn, where an optional, 10-rated obstacle awaits.

  • Embark on the thrilling Fawlty Towers trail, which unveils new routes and introduces a dozen fresh obstacles across three well-known areas of Sand Mountain: Fault Line, Johnny’s Hot Tub, and the West Rim Rock Garden.

    Expect steep climbs, descents, off-camber challenges, and a few blind notches. Navigating this trail requires experienced driving skills, and having a trusted spotter is a must for conquering this exciting new off-road adventure!

  • Climb to the summit and take in breathtaking views of Sand Hollow Reservoir and the majestic cliffs of Zion National Park in the distance.

    This popular trail, fills up quickly due to its novelty, provides incredible 360-degree vistas of Sand Hollow Reservoir, Zion Park, Pine Valley Mountains (usually snow-capped for United By Bronco), Warner Valley, the Arizona Strip, Hurricane Cliffs, and Hurricane Sand Dunes.

  • The Ledges trail is situated at the southernmost edge of the Hurricane Sand Dunes, taking you across the famous dunes of Sand Hollow. As you venture further, the trail's difficulty increases, offering a challenging journey with off-camber sections and steep drops. Precise tire placement and careful spotting are crucial throughout the entire trail, making it suitable only for experienced 4x4 drivers.

  • The Maze has swiftly gained a reputation as one of St. George's essential trails, especially for those seeking a technical and hard-core challenge. If you're unfazed by steep ascents and descents, extremely off-camber situations, and exposure to 1,200-foot cliff edges, then this trail is tailor-made for you!

    Obstacles present themselves one after another, maintaining a consistent level of difficulty. Approaching the first obstacle, known as "The Drop," a glance to the right reveals a cliff just a few feet away, plunging 1,000 feet down to the valley below. This trail is a thrilling experience for those who savor adrenaline at the pace of 1 mile per hour.

  • Papa Smurf, a modified iteration of the lesser-known Smurfette trail on Sand Mountain, is situated in the area between Front Range and The Fallen. This trail is characterized by a series of ledges, waterfalls, and ravines, some of which lack bypasses, contributing to its challenging 8 difficulty rating.

  • Queens Court offers a unique off-road experience on Sand Mountain, deviating from traditional trails in the area. Starting south of the East Rim trail, this beautiful trail winds its way along rugged washes and boulder landings, presenting several challenging features such as ledges, tall steps, and off-camber sections. The trail's character is defined by its creativity-demanding boulder sections, where drivers must navigate through varying lines.

  • Nestled on the south side of Sand Mountain, beyond Plan B, Unforgiven Trail promises an adrenaline-packed adventure with towering wall climbs, technical segments, and challenging off-camber maneuvers. Once you hit the trail, expect relentless obstacles demanding high belly clearance, unwavering commitment, and the nerve to conquer steep ascents.

    Explore a lesser-known gem of Sand Mountain with the Risky Biz Trail. This off-road adventure weaves its way through a previously unexplored section of Sand Mountain, promising a thrilling combination of sandy washes, slickrock obstacles, and technical challenges. Brace yourself for the possibility of vehicle damage if you don't heed your spotter's guidance!

Extreme

(Rock Buggy’s Only or Heavily Modified Vehicles)

  • This trail teeters on the edge of being considered buggy territory. While very skilled drivers in heavily modified full-size rigs have successfully navigated it, escaping without body damage is rare. Many rigs have faced challenges and, in some cases, big fails on this trail. Starting and ending at the base of the rock formations just south of Sand Hollow State Park, it offers an adrenaline-packed experience for buggies and heavily modified full-body rigs, although it's not as highly rated as Arrowhead Canyon in the neighboring canyon to the east.

    The Fallen trail is a heartfelt tribute built by local veterans to honor their fallen comrades, featuring obstacles dedicated to soldiers from various American conflicts. With 10 plaques at 10 obstacles, The Fallen also includes a memorial for anyone wanting to leave memories of their friends or family. The main trail boasts a challenging HARD 8 rating, with a couple of 9-rated optional obstacles. Additionally, there's a shadow trail rated 6 right alongside the main trail, providing a bypass at any point.

  • Register for Saturday Group Run

    Joint Effort kicks off with a sandy drive up a wide wash, setting the stage for an exciting off-road adventure. This trail is characterized by numerous steep slickrock climbs, challenging drop-offs, and plenty of off-camber sections, making rollovers a common occurrence. Adding to the thrill, participants will encounter a few slot canyons along the way. Notably, the trail crosses the Double Sammy trail in a narrow canyon with a sandy bottom, adding an extra layer of excitement. With each consecutive obstacle becoming progressively more difficult, drivers are advised to tighten those belts and brace themselves for a fun and challenging ride.

  • Nasty Half lives up to its name, offering a challenging off-road experience with intense climbs and steep waterfalls. This trail, situated in the vicinity of the Sand Hollow Reservoir dunes, presents a formidable combination of slick red sandstone and sand, testing the skills of any driver.

    The trail has gained a reputation for subjecting rigs to substantial body damage and mechanical stress, earning it a notorious status among off-road enthusiasts. Rigorous preparation is recommended, with vehicles equipped with at least two lockers and a minimum of 35" tires. The combination of slickrock and sand, along with the continuous obstacles, makes Nasty Half a demanding trail that provides an exhilarating and memorable off-road adventure.

  • Renegade Trail lives up to its name, offering a dynamic and challenging off-road experience for drivers who crave variety and excitement. The trail earned its moniker because it allows participants to explore the full spectrum of Sand Mountain, hitting the hottest "optional" obstacles along the way. Renegade is tailored for experienced drivers who are self-sufficient on all other 8-rated trails at Sand Mountain.

  • This trail starts off with a true "gatekeeper" obstacle. If you can't get through it, it's probably best to head back to camp, as this obstacle sets the stage for the following 50+ unnamed obstacles. There are so many thrilling obstacles that it would be impossible to keep track of them. Right from the start, you're faced with off-camber head games and multiple tight spots requiring precise tire placement right along the edge of moderate-sized cliff edges.

    The trail continues to wind up some exciting waterfalls, multiple wedges, and a couple of walls that a vehicle shouldn't be able to drive up and over. Dubbed the "Happy Ending" is a hill that messes with anyone's mind, as there is a straight drop-off on the driver's side making the moderately challenging climb feel much worse than it really is.

    Body damage is likely - full-bodied vehicles beware.

  • Buggy Territory Alert! This trail earns its tough rating with climbs to the top of deep slot canyons, where your tires might span both walls. Slip up, and you could get stuck between the cage and one wall with the tires against the other. After a short sandy road drive by Sand Hollow State Park, head to the southern wash that takes you to the bottom of the canyon, where the real fun kicks in. The trail doesn't just go up the canyon; it goes OVER it, climbing the sidewalls.
