TRAIL GUIDE: Mitchel Matthews

DESCRIPTION:

This trail is rated a 7 (for trail rating information, click here) and is located at the heart of Sand Mountain. There are a few by-passes and many options to overcome obstacles. Climbing, descending, slick rocks and lots of off-camber technical climbs are available on this trail. This trail will guide you on the “easier route” unless your group as a whole would like to do the harder way but even tho stated “easier route,” this is NOT an easy trail - Highly encouraged experienced off-roaders for this trail !

This trail is geared towards your more experienced off-roader and for Broncos that have locked front and rear, and 35 inch tires and up.

You will pass the Water Tanks next to the Reservoir. You will get a nice view of the Virgin River Valley in the Washington Dam area. At the top, you will get views of Zion Park in the distance. There is a fun option to go into the hot tub and play around climbing in and out - this is a pretty hard obstacle and there is a by-pass.

***KEEP IN MIND, THE WEATHER WILL CHANGE THE TRAIL CONDITIONS***

Scenery

From the trail line-up at the Water Tanks, you approach the sand dunes on the way to the first obstacles. You will see a view of the Virgin River Valley in the Washington Dam area.  By the time you reach the top of the trail, Zion Park will be in the distance.  If you are lucky, most of the time peaks of the Pine Valley Mountains to the west will be capped with snow! Heading back down the trail, you go into the canyon at the bottom of steep sand dunes where you first came in from the water tanks.

Surface

Sand upon sand to the top of sand dunes!  From the sand into slickrock area, there is an optional area to put your tires on the steep slickrock challenges. Continue on the long the edge of a deep canyon until reaching the start of the main trail.  This is a small wash that leads to a steep slickrock hill and continues up the hill to many ledgy, steep, and off-camber challenges.  The top of the trail turns down a two-track road and descends down to a steep sand hill then goes to the bottom of the sand dunes you came in on.
